The School of Law is one of the largest UK law schools, ranked 4th in the Guardian’s University 2012 Guide, 7th in the England and 3rd in London for Law in the UK government 2008 Research Assessment Exercise, denoting research excellence of international importance. The School adopts a wide spectrum of approaches to legal research, including doctrinal, theoretical, applied, comparative, historical, sociological, empirical and interdisciplinary perspectives. Relevant research projects include “Study of incentives in health”, a five-year project (2009-2014) co-directed by Professor Richard Ashcroft, is a study of the ethical, economic and psychological dimensions of the use of personal financial incentives to encourage healthy behavior for improving personal and public health. Professor Ashcroft also works on the role of human rights theory, law and practice in bioethics policy, and on ethical challenges in public health. He has a longstanding interest in biomedical research ethics and gene therapy.
