Cookies and Privacy Policy

What is a Cookie?

Upon visiting a website or utilising a resource found on one – such as viewing a video, listening to some music or manipulating an interactive map - a small file may be generated and stored on your device. These ‘cookies’ are used for a variety of different purposes but are often created to remember any specific preferences & settings you choose to help improve your future experience on a site, and to allow site owners to see which pages visitors most prefer, how long they spend on the site and how they access the site so that they are able to see how popular their content is. Sometimes cookies are used so that websites with advertisements display marketing messages appropriate to its visitors based on information such as their search history – Google Ads being a popular example of this. Without cookies, a website will think that you are a new person each time you visit and may forget who you are even when you navigate to a new page during a single session.

Cookies may either be short-term (‘session cookies’), lasting only for the duration of your visit and then deleted, or long-term (‘persistent cookies’) to be used on repeated visits.

Cookies may be generated by the website that you are visiting (‘first-party cookies’) but may also be generated by other websites that are responsible for some of the content that you are accessing (‘third-party cookies’). An example of this is the use of an embedded YouTube video used by some websites – as YouTube videos allow for viewers to modify certain settings such as the video resolution, language and the use of subtitles/closed captions, cookies may be used to remember these settings across repeat visits so that you do not have to manually re-enter them each time.

Cookies are device-specific, so accessing a website on your desktop computer with your preferences stored via a cookie may result in a different experience to visiting the same website via an internet-enabled mobile/cellular phone that has yet to have a cookie generated. They are also browser-specific, meaning that in the same manner a website’s cookie may be generated while visiting using a particular browser but when using a different browser on the same device your settings may not transfer over.
